Pedodontic Dentistry
Pedodontic Dentistry, or Pediatric Dentistry, focuses on the dental needs of children from birth through adolescence. The Pedodontist undergoes an additional two to three years of specialized training after earning their dental degree. In addition to aiding in proper growth and development, the Pedodontist is trained extensively in child psychology to establish a foundation of trust and confidence with their young patients, and also specializes in caring for "special needs" patients such as children with cerebral palsy, mental retardation or autism.
Poor oral health can affect school performance, social interactions and your child's general well-being. Studies have shown that dental caries (tooth decay) is the most chronic childhood ailment. Although baby teeth will eventually be replaced with permanent teeth, their health plays an important role in your child's overall health. Proper chewing and nutrition, speech development, and the maintenance of tooth spacing for optimal placement when the permanent teeth eventually erupt are all impacted by the health of baby teeth.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children have their first dental visit within six months of the appearance of their first tooth or by their first birthday. We begin with a program of preventative home care, a caries risk evaluation, information and advice on habits like thumbsucking and pacifiers, diet counseling, and much more. Our Pedodontic suites are designed to make your child feel welcome and comfortable. Working with you, your Pedodontist can help get your child started early on the right track toward good dental health for life.
