An Extreme Makeover with Conscious Sedation
Tina Scites approached the podium and proceeded to address her colleagues at their employer’s union meeting with a glowing smile and an air of confidence to match. She attended many of these meetings in the past. She always came prepared and ready to speak if she was called upon to answer a question. She would sit quietly and listen to others deliberate and never thought of making her presence known. However, this day was much different from previous times. Tina felt differently about herself, now. She was no longer embarrassed by her appearance. For the first time in years, she spoke with her hands resting in front of her, holding her notes, not over her mouth. She had a new, beautiful smile.
“My new smile has changed my life,” as Tina tells her story. “I knew that I needed to go to the dentist, but I was petrified with the idea. As the years went by and my dental problems became more and more apparent, I gave up on any hope that my teeth could be restored. My fears turned into despair. I stopped caring about my overall appearance. When I look back, which was not very long ago, it’s hard to believe how much my “dental makeover” has lifted my spirits and self-esteem. I feel like a totally “new and improved” person!
It all began a few months ago when Tina’s dentist, Dr. Blumenfeld, suggested the use of a new form of sedation that requires his patients to take a pill, remain conscious during treatment and have only a dreamlike remembrance of the time spent in the dental chair. Most importantly they felt no discomfort.
In a matter two visits, Tina’s smile was completely transformed. With the use of conscious sedation, she was able to allow Dr. Blumenfeld to prepare multiple teeth for crowns, bridges and fillings during one appointment. “During my consultation and examination, Dr. Blumenfeld and his staff went over everything that I needed to have done. On the day of treatment, I took a pill an hour before my arrival time. By the time my sister drove me to The Dental Group, I was feeling totally relaxed. When I arrived, I was given additional medication, as needed, and was carefully monitored throughout the procedure. I have a few memories of my appointment on that day, but none associated with pain.”
Tina adds, “I have nothing but kind words to express the way I have been treated by Dr. Blumenfeld and his staff, Nicoletta, Paul and Rhonda. At all times, they respected my fears and treated me in a very caring manner with compassion. I felt confident that I could place my trust in them. I want to say “Thank you for making me feel so at home in your office. And, most importantly, thank you for the new ME!””
“Tina fears of dental treatment are not unique. On the contrary, a considerable portion of the population shares Tina’s apprehensiveness when faced with the need for extensive dental work. Dr. Blumenfeld explains to his patients, “Fear is reality for us and has no boundaries. Often times, it stands in the way of a person’s ability to seek the care that they need. If we can put our patients at ease about needles and allay their concerns about experiencing pain, and in a very short period of time, Tina’s story will be heard through the testimony of many others, just like her.”
