Comparing Orthodontics

Invisalign® vs Traditional Orthodontics

For patients interested in orthodontic treatment for themselves or their child, the question of tray-based or traditional treatment can be vexing. At The Dental Group, we straighten teeth through both tray-based and metal braces, and have made this guide to explain the benefits and limitations of each treatment.

Invisalign

Known for its near-invisibility during treatment, Invisalign uses a series of trays to move teeth into ideal position. Aligners are made using digital impressions of your bite, and each set of trays is worn for two weeks.

As aligners are easily removed during meals and regular brushings, this is a great option for patients who do not want to adjust their diets or oral hygiene routines during the course of treatment. The biggest draw for Invisalign however, is the previously mentioned discretion it provides. Trays are made using durable thermoplastic, which allows them to look completely natural when worn.

This choice is optimal for older teen patients with matured jaw alignment where further changes in development are not expected, or adults who are experiencing a lapse of alignment from previous orthodontic treatment. Younger patients and those who need treatment for moderate or severe malocclusion and misalignment would also be better served by traditional braces. If you wonder whether Invisalign is right for your smile, contact our office today.

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces use metal brackets bonded to the teeth and are able to correct the widest range of occlusal and alignment issues. This treatment can be used in phases and in concert with other orthodontic appliances, such as palate expanders, to create healthy and aesthetically pleasing smiles. Braces are not limited to children, as many adults with heavy crowding can benefit from the use of braces.

Metal braces can be customized by changing the color of the bands which anchor archwires. These bands can be a favorite color, or else white and silver to minimize the visible effect of the braces themselves.

Though they are able to correct the widest range of problems a patient may experience, braces are noticeable and can irritate soft tissue. Without specialized flossing tools and a dedication to good oral hygiene, braces can also be difficult to clean.
